Hep-Art is organized as a virtual company. The corporate office is located in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The first product-lead, the AMC-BAL bio-artificial liver, is protected by a world-wide patent (US, EU, Can, Aus, Jp). Research and development on the bio-artificial liver system is performed at the Academic Medical Center of the University of Amsterdam (AMC) by Dr. Robert Chamuleau and his colleagues.
The AMC-BAL has been tested in Italy in a clinical trial of 12 patients with acute liver failure waiting for liver transplantation and showed efficacy and safety.
